Sauk Prairie hosted one of eight regional qualifying meets for the JV State Wisconsin Wrestling Challenge Series and produced two champions and a runner-up finish last Saturday.

One of eight statewide regionals, Sauk Prairie entered eight wrestlers in the competition and finished fifth out of 12 teams with 104 points in the team competition.

Sophomore Riley Minette recorded a decision and a pin to place first at 113 pounds. Freshman Nolan Vils was first at 195 after posting back-to-back pins in less than 5 minutes of mat time.

Freshman Peyton Palmer was second at 220 after winning two of three matches with two pins.

“We got three guys to the JV state meet, three out of eight is pretty solid,” Sauk Prairie head coach Matt Gaffney said.

The trio will advance to the JV state tournament at Wausau West High School on Jan. 25.

Gaffney said that Vils will also enter the varsity lineup this week at 195 pounds.

“I’m excited for Nolan Vils,” Gaffney said. “It will be fun watching him grow if he sticks with it. He’s a physical kid. I’m excited to see how he does at JV state. He’s been working hard all year.”
